The truth about Soy Milk

Soy milk is a liquid made from ground cooked soybeans that is usually fortified (with calcium and vitamins) and used as a milk substitute.

For long time soy milk have been used as a milk substitute. Some lactose intolerant people drink it because they want a milk substitute. Some health-conscious people drink it because they think it is the “heart-healthy low fat option.” And some vegans drink it because they don’t want to drink cow milk.

Soy is definitely one of the most controversial foods in the world. Depending on who you ask, it is either a wonderful superfood or a hormone disrupting poison.

But why all this controverse about Soy ?

Over 90% of soy produced in the U.S. is genetically modified and the crops are sprayed with the herbicides, which may be associated with adverse effects on health.

What about Soy milk?

Almost every ingredient in soy milk  is cause for serious concern. Here are the ingredients in most of the Soy milk brands

Soy milk (Filtered Water, Whole Soybeans), Cane Sugar, Sea Salt, Carrageenan, Natural Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin A, Palmitate, Vitamin D2, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin B12.

Carrageenan

This seaweeds based additive is extremely inflammatory is so caustic to the digestive tract. The world health organization classifies one type of carregenan as a possible human carcinogen.

Vitamin D2

Vitamin D2 is a synthetic and isolated form of the vitamin D and, as a result, is extremely poorly absorbed.

Vitamin A

The vitamin A added to soy milk (and other non-dairy milks) is synthetic and, as a result, lacks the vitamin co-factors. Remember, your vitamin is only helpful if accompanied by its co-factors.

Natural flavors

“Natural flavors” can even mean various additives, even forms of MSG and artificial sweeteners.

In conclusion Non Dairy milk are good alternative for vegetarian and lactose intolerant people but we have to be careful about the ingredients. Always check the labels

I personally recommend avoid Soy milk for the reason that I expose in this post, and always look for unsweetened varieties of almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk between others.

See you soon
